Yes, I'm a Moonie. I do hope to post more Sailor Moon content soon, including a comparison of the first arc of the 90s anime, Crystal, and the manga. For now, here are my impressions of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live.
I saw PGSMTSL at the Byham Theater in Pittsburgh, PA, on the opening night of the North American tour. The show follows the base plot of the show/manga reasonably loosely. They do a good job of summarizing who the characters are and their ambitions in a brief amount of time. Unfortunately, this means Rei, Makoto, and Ami take a backseat. You'd be disappointed if you were expecting the show to spend a lot of time on them. It does do a good job at least getting us to know their personalities, and the choreography seems to give us a lot of hints that aren't verbally said. If you were hoping to see the Four Earthly Kings, it might be best to tell you now they aren't in the show. Unfortunately, they aren't really needed to make the plot go forward.
All of the characters were perfectly cast, both from a visual point of view and in terms of their ability to portray themselves. The real stars of this show are the actors/actresses who play Usagi, Queen Beryl, and Mamori. Beryl's numbers, in particular, were amazing. A shout-out to the bad guy dancers. They were seriously great and looked like they had a ton of fun dancing.
A quick look at my video will show you how incredible the costumes are. They are just perfect.
My favorite part was a flub the Sailor Moon actress made. She dropped one of her glowing props mid-dance number, and it was the most Usagi moment ever.
I don't want to go further into the rabbit hole, but I want to clarify that The Supers Live is a show worth seeing. Just make sure you get seats close to the center. You'll notice in my video that the screen behind the set was half cut off from my view, and the entire show is in Japanese, so I wasn't able to read most of the subtitles. If you have the opportunity, go see it!
